Federer Stunned in 2nd Round Loss

The day began oddly enough with word that Roger Federer's orange soled shoes did not conform to Wimbledon's all white dress code and would need to be replaced.

It ended shockingly enough with Federer losing in the second round at the All England Club his earliest Grand Slam exit in a decade. It ended his record streak of reaching at least the quarterfinals in 36 consecutive major tournaments.

And in between Oh there was so much more to this unpredictable Wednesday including four time major champion Maria Sharapova's loss to a qualifier and the injuries that forced seven players to leave because of withdrawals or mid match retirements believed to be the most in a single day at a Grand Slam tournament in the 45 year Open era.

In that group second seeded Victoria Azarenka sixth seeded Jo Wilfried Tsonga Steve Darcis the man who stunned 12 time major champion Rafael Nadal in the first round and 18th seeded John Isner who will forever be remembered for winning a 70 68 fifth set in the longest match ever more than 11 hours. This time Isner lasted all of 15 minutes stopping in the third game after hurting his left knee.

Federer Sharapova and Azarenka were three of seven players who have been ranked No. 1 that departed in a span of about 8 hours. They also were among 12 seeded players heading home.

Most remarkable of all of course was Federer's 6 7 (5) 7 6 (5) 7 5 7 6 (5) loss to 116th ranked Sergiy Stakhovsky in the day's last match on Centre Court. Federer hadn't been beaten this early at a Grand Slam tournament since the first round of the French Open on May 26 2003 back before he owned a single trophy from any of the sport's most important sites.

Now his collection is 17 total with seven from Wimbledon including last year's.

This is a setback a disappointment whatever you want to call it Federer said. Got to get over this one. Some haven't hurt this much that's for sure.

In addition to the hard to believe results and the slew of injuries there was all manner of sliding and tumbling on the revered grass courts prompting questions about whether something made them more slippery.

Very black day summed up 10th seeded Marin Cilic who said a bad left knee forced him to pull out of his match.

One had to wonder what Thursday might bring. The Day 4 schedule featured defending champion Serena Williams who took a 32 match winning streak into the second round against Caroline Garcia last year's runner up No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska 2011 Wimbledon winner Novak Djokovic and 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro.

They were to take the court knowing that after three days of the two week tournament merely halfway through the second round a total of five of the 10 highest seeded women were gone along with four of the top 10 men.

Bizarre said 17th seeded Sloane Stephens of the U.S. who stuck around by winning her match 8 6 in the third set. I don't know what's going on.

No one did.

One hypothesis making the rounds The grass is different because there is a new head groundsman at the All England Club Neil Stubley (keep in mind though that he's been helping prepare the courts here for more than 15 years albeit with a less distinguished title).

Another popular idea was that the recent weather it's been in the 60s and humid but without a drop of rain so far is affecting traction.

Last moments of Trayvon Martins life to be painted in detail

A teen ager's cell phone call to Trayvon Martin will get more intense scrutiny in a Florida courtroom today

SANFORD Fla. A florida jury deciding the fate of a neighborhood watch volunteer charged with killing Trayvon Martin will hear more stirring testimony today from a 19 year old woman who heard the last moments of the boy's life.

Rachel Jeantel 19 says she was on the phone with Trayvon right before he was killed and that George Zimmerman stared at and then came after the young man who tried several times to run away.

She was one of three state witnesses Wednesday who painted Zimmerman as the aggressor in the deadly confrontation that later sparked racial controversy and protests around the country.

A man was watching him Jeantel said. He (Trayvon) told me he was going to try to lose him.

Zimmerman 29 says he acted in self defense when he shot and killed Trayvon Martin in a gated community minutes after calling police to report that he was following a suspicious person. The prosecution says Zimmerman profiled and murdered the black teen. If convicted of second degree murder Zimmerman could be sentenced to life in prison.

Defense attorneys plan to question Jeantel Thursday about possible inconsistencies in her story. Jeantel admitted during testimony that she had lied twice to authorites She said she told Trayvon's family she was 16 when she was 18. She also said she lied about going to a hospital instead of Trayvon's funeral because she didn't want to see his body.

Jeantel who exchanged hundreds of calls and text messages with Trayvon during their friendship said the teen called her as he was walking back from 7 Eleven on the night of the Feb. 26 2012 killing. During their conversation Trayvon said a creepy man was staring at him and wanted to get away Jeantel said.

Later the man began following Trayvon so the teen ran through the gated community to try to get away said Jeantel who wore all black to court.

The teen was out of breath when Trayvon told Jeantel he had lost the man. Shortly after Trayvon told Jeantel the man was back and behind him she said.

I told him you better run Jeantel said but within moments she heard two voices.

She continued Then I heard a hard breathing man say what are you doing around here

Jeantel then heard a bump and heard Trayvon saying get off get off she said. Seconds later the phone hung up and when Jeantel called back no one answered.

Three days later Jeantel said she learned Trayvon was dead. I had thought he was close by his daddy's house so someone would come help him she said visibly upset.

In the next few weeks she was contacted by Trayvon's family and their attorney who convinced her to talk about the conversation. Jeantel said she didn't think her role would be significant because she heard Zimmerman Trayvon's killer had been arrested.

Wednesday jurors the judge and courtroom onlookers all leaned in closely through Jeantel's riveting testimony. At times the court reporter and jurors struggled to hear her. One juror E6 spoke up during Jeantel's testimony and saying she couldn't hear what the young woman was saying.

Meanwhile Wednesday several residents who lived nearby the scene of the shooting testified that they believe Trayvon was yelling for help and being beaten by Zimmerman before he died.

The witnesses former neighbors of Zimmerman's in the Retreat at Twin Lakes gated community described trying to make out what was going on outside their windows on the rainy night of Feb. 26 2012.

Jayne Surdyk testified that she believes she heard Trayvon Martin screaming for help shortly before being shot.

Surdyka was in an upstairs bedroom when the sound of loud voices caught her attention. Startled Surdyka minutes later opened a window she said and heard a dominant aggressive voice and a lighter voice from a boy.

She said it was dark and raining so she couldn't see clearly who the people were.

I could see two people on the ground one on top of each other Surdyka said. They were wrestling or shuffling.

Then she said she heard two cries for help. They were excruciating she said. I felt like it was the boy's voice.

Prosecutors later played Surdyka's 911 call. In it the woman is heard crying and describing hearing shots.

Later Surdyka said she was making assumptions when she said the voice was coming from a young man. She also admitted that she went on CNN in disguise to describe what she saw.

Jeannee Manalo another resident of the gated community said she thought she saw George Zimmerman on top of Trayvon Martin during a struggle.

Manalo said she heard howling then someone yelling help closer. She believes she saw a larger man on top of a smaller man. After watching the news Manalo said she compared photos of a young Trayvon Martin wearing a hoodie and a football jersey to photos of Zimmerman's full body taken by police.

Every houseguest who walks into the Big Brother house is like a beautiful unique snowflake walking into a gigantic vat of boiling lava. Look there's Nick an entrepreneur who self identifies as Peter Parker He's scary and non threatening...but just like Spider Man he can lay down the smack when he needs to. And look there's Helen a married mother of two who describes herself as a Chicago politician even though she lives in Virginia. And look there's Aaryn who insists that she is the ultimate Texas girl and spells her name like a character on Game of Thrones. But while we're talking Texas we shouldn't forget Minnesota which is often described as The Texas of the North by people who've never heard of Texas. This year's tribute from District Minnesota is Kaitlin a woman with the eyebrows of Joan Crawford.

And let's not forget about the lifeguard with the haircut that screams Baddest Dude in the late '90s Boy Band and the pectoral muscles that scream Unemployment sure has given me a lot of time to work on my unemployment muscles. I forget what the lifeguard's name is but he kind of talks like a fifth grader doing a simultaneous impression of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Blink 182. I love the ladies said the lifeguard and the ladies love me. I'm too lazy too look up his name so let's just call him Dudebro. You laugh but someday Dudebro will be President. By god this is America.

And this my friends is Big Brother the longest running scientific experiment on human subjects unless you count Pepsi's ongoing controversial decision to keep selling Mountain Dew which will definitely turn everyone's skin green by 2027. Big Brother 15 promises a whole host of new innovations. A bigger cast A longer season More nominees An intriguing and probably doomed to fail new anti floater system Julie Chen looking better than ever because of some weird Orphan Black clone therapy probably The season premiere moved faster than ever thanks to the expanded cast. We got the usual quick hit introduction of all the players all of which quickly established lame character traits that will disappear almost immediately when cabin fever sets in around week 2.

The most notable introduction for Big Brother fans was Elissa a yoga instructor/nutritionist/other synonyms for unemployed contestant who is the sister of Rachel Reilly. Now Rachel had one of the most incredible character arcs of any housemate in the recent era. In Big Brother 12 she was a half mad villain the Lady Macbeth to her duncecap showmance Brendon's Mister Macbeth in Big Brother 13 she was the battered and bruised hero. Elissa announced two pieces of strategy one smart and one less smart. Smart One Assemble an all woman alliance. Less Smart One Not tell anyone that she is Rachel's sister. (She looks like Rachel. She sounds like Rachel. The producers will probably just tell the housemates that she's related to Rachel.)

The fifteenth clone of Julie Chen assembled the new cast outside of the house and staggered them in four by four. There's always one housemate who goes for the Big Personality play and this year that tactic belongs to GinaMarie who pronounces her name like Gina Murray. She is a pageant coordinator. She has a tongue ring. She's from Staten Island which means that according to the rules of Reality TV her mandatory character trait is saying I'm from Staten Island every two seconds in case everyone forgot. She was jumping up and down on a bed and she jumped right into the arms of Howard aka The Christian Guy With Muscles. GinaMarie is what it looks like when a GIF pretends to be a human and she's already one of my favorite houseguests. In beauty pageant terms she floats like Kirsten Dunst but stings like Denise Richards.

And now a word from Dudebro Should I bunk with the girls and have a good vibe with them Or should I be bro bro with the guys I was totally dazed and confused dude. I feel like news would be much more interesting if people applied the phrase 'be bro bro' to international politics.
